Avalanche Comeback Falls Short as Colorado Drops 3-2 Decision to Flyers.

PHILADELPHIA — October 19, 2026 — The Colorado Avalanche attempted to overcome an early deficit Monday night but came up short in a 3-2 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers, who earned their second consecutive victory after a difficult start to the season. Matvei Michkov led Philadelphia's offense with two goals, while Noel Acciari added another to help the Flyers build a lead that Colorado could not overcome. Martin Necas and rookie T.J. Hughes scored for the Avalanche, who fell to 5-3-1 on the season. Philadelphia entered the matchup looking to build momentum after snapping a nine-game losing streak with a victory over Ottawa on Saturday. Michkov continued his strong offensive start, increasing his team-leading goal total to six. The Flyers opened the scoring at 7:41 of the first period when Michkov converted on the power play. He extended Philadelphia's advantage to 2-0 at 12:23 of the second period, circling behind the Colorado net before sending a wrist shot through traffic and past Avalanche goaltender Mackenzie Blackwood. Colorado responded late in the second period when Necas scored with 2:08 remaining, cutting Philadelphia's lead to 2-1 and giving the Avalanche an opportunity to complete a comeback in the final period. However, the Flyers regained control at 6:34 of the third when Acciari scored his first goal with Philadelphia, restoring the team's two-goal advantage. The Avalanche continued to battle and pulled within one goal again when Hughes scored at 14:40 of the third period. The rookie has now scored in consecutive games after recording his first NHL goal during Colorado's victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday.
Despite the late push, Colorado could not find the equalizer, allowing Philadelphia to secure the 3-2 victory. Blackwood finished with 21 saves for the Avalanche, while Flyers goaltender Joseph Woll stopped 24 shots to earn his first win with Philadelphia after spending the previous five seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. The game also marked an important milestone for Philadelphia rookie Cole Knuble, who made his NHL debut with the organization he supported growing up. The 22-year-old forward played 13 minutes and 44 seconds. His father, Mike Knuble, previously played for the Flyers from 2005 to 2009 and returned for a brief stint in 2013. For Colorado, the loss highlighted the challenge of recovering from multiple-goal deficits. Although the Avalanche generated offense through Necas and Hughes, Philadelphia answered Colorado's first goal and maintained its advantage through the final minutes.
The Avalanche will look to rebound quickly as they continue their road trip against the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday. Philadelphia will attempt to extend its winning streak when it visits the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday.
