STORRS, Conn. — Solo Ball scored 17 points, including 11 after halftime, as No. 4 Connecticut extended its winning streak to 10 games with a 73–57 victory over Marquette on Sunday. Tarris Reed Jr. added 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds to help the Huskies continue their strong start to Big East play. Silas Demary Jr. contributed 14 points for UConn (14–1, 4–0 Big East), which pulled away early in the second half after a tightly contested opening period. Marquette (5–10, 0–4 Big East) was led by Nigel James with 13 points, while Chase Ross finished with 11. The Golden Eagles have now opened conference play with four straight losses for the first time since the 1998–99 season. Ball sparked the decisive run shortly after halftime, scoring seven points in just over five minutes. He capped one sequence by taking an outlet pass from Reed and finishing a three-point play that stretched UConn’s lead to 48–33. Reed and Eric Reibe followed with baskets to push the margin to 19, and Jaylin Stewart’s dunk gave the Huskies their first 20-point advantage with just over eight minutes remaining. UConn also built momentum late in the first half. Demary’s three-pointer made it 31–19 before Marquette responded with baskets from Ross and Joshua Clark to cut the deficit to five. Reed closed the half with a free throw and a dunk in the final seconds, sending the Huskies into the break ahead 37–29.
The opening half was marked by frequent fouls, with four Marquette starters and three UConn starters picking up at least two fouls each. Marquette missed opportunities to convert multiple three-point plays, making just one of three free throws following fouled layups. Marquette played shorthanded, missing four injured players including Sean Jones. UConn was without Jayden Ross for the second straight game.
Marquette will host Xavier on Wednesday, while UConn travels to face Providence the same day.
