Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov will represent Finland at the upcoming Ice Hockey World Championship after missing the entire NHL season due to recovery from surgery on a torn ACL and MCL in his right knee. Despite being sidelined all year, Barkov received full medical clearance from team doctors following his end-of-season evaluation.
Barkov said he remained hopeful throughout his rehabilitation that he could return to play sooner than initially expected. Although his recovery timeline was estimated at seven to nine months, he believed a return late in the season or during the playoffs was possible if his rehab progressed well. He noted that early improvements in mobility and strength helped him stay motivated during the recovery process. The forward began skating again in January and initially aimed for a late March return. However, with the Panthers out of playoff contention after an injury-heavy season, his focus shifted toward preparing for international competition instead. Barkov also reflected on the difficulty of missing major events such as the Olympics, describing it as one of the most challenging parts of his recovery. Barkov expressed excitement about returning to competitive hockey and will be joined on Team Finland by teammate Anton Lundell. The World Championship is scheduled to take place from May 15 to May 31.
