The Toronto Blue Jays received worrisome news regarding star outfielder George Springer ahead of the 2026 season. Entering 2025, Springer faced uncertainty following a disappointing 2024 campaign, with some speculation that Toronto might consider offloading his contract. However, Springer rebounded strongly, playing a crucial role in helping the Blue Jays reach the World Series. Throughout the late stages of the season and the playoffs, Springer struggled with injuries. According to Antolín Maldonado Ríos of El Nuevo Día, these issues influenced his decision to withdraw from the World Baseball Classic (WBC) for Puerto Rico. While it is unclear whether Springer’s injury is new or a continuation of playoff discomfort, the Blue Jays would face challenges if it is a new condition. Springer remains a key offensive player and is in the final year of his six-year, $150 million contract. In 2025, Springer posted a .309 batting average with 32 home runs and 84 RBIs. In postseason play, he hit .284, adding four home runs and ten RBIs. Springer’s absence from Puerto Rico’s WBC roster leaves the team adjusting its lineup. Alongside Springer, Kike Hernández also opted out. Nevertheless, Ríos notes Puerto Rico still has outfield options, including Heliot Ramos of the San Francisco Giants, MJ Meléndez, and infielder/outfielder Javier Báez. Additionally, Riley Greene may become available if he does not join Team USA.
During Toronto’s playoff run, Springer sustained injuries, including a right oblique issue in Game 3 of the World Series. Despite the injury, he hit a pivotal three-run home run in Game 7 of the ALCS.
Postseason MRI results revealed “significant inflammation” but no tear. After Game 7, Springer expressed his commitment to the team, stating he would play through the pain. Blue Jays manager John Schneider described Springer as the team’s “heart and soul” in 2025.
