Chargers Rookie Nick Barrett Faces Uphill Battle to Find Role Along Defensive Line.

The Los Angeles Chargers have received plenty of positive attention surrounding their 2026 rookie class, with several young players already making their presence felt during offseason workouts. However, fifth-round defensive tackle Nick Barrett enters training camp facing a much more challenging path toward earning meaningful playing time.

While rookies such as Akheem Mesidor, Genesis Smith, and Jake Slaughter have generated early buzz, Barrett has remained relatively quiet throughout the offseason. The South Carolina product enters camp with an opportunity to develop into a valuable piece of the Chargers’ defensive front, but he will need to compete for every snap in a crowded position group. The Chargers selected Barrett with the goal of adding depth to their defensive line rotation. Despite losing veteran contributors Da’Shawn Hand and Otito Ogbonnia during free agency, Los Angeles still has several established players ahead of Barrett on the depth chart. Second-year defender Jamaree Caldwell and third-year lineman Justin Eboigbe are expected to take on larger roles, while offseason addition Dalvin Tomlinson provides experience and stability at nose tackle. Teair Tart is also expected to remain an important part of the defensive line rotation after a strong 2025 campaign. With that competition ahead of him, Barrett’s immediate role may be limited. However, the rookie’s skill set could eventually give him a path to becoming a dependable rotational piece in defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary’s scheme.

Barrett’s strength and ability to defend against the run are among his biggest assets. During his time at South Carolina, he primarily lined up as a defensive tackle over opposing guards, showcasing the versatility to play multiple spots along the interior defensive line.

While Barrett may not possess the explosive athleticism of some of the league’s top interior pass rushers, his physical style and ability to hold his ground could allow him to carve out a role as a reliable run defender. If he can improve his quickness and develop as a pass rusher at the NFL level, his versatility could make him a valuable option in Los Angeles’ defensive rotation. The Chargers have shown a willingness under their new defensive approach to give linemen opportunities to attack from different alignments. That flexibility could benefit Barrett as he continues adjusting to the professional game.

Still, training camp will be a major test for the rookie. Surpassing players like Caldwell or Eboigbe for immediate defensive tackle snaps will be a difficult challenge, and Barrett’s most realistic path may be developing into a future replacement for Tomlinson.

For now, the focus will be on proving he belongs. A strong performance during training camp and limited opportunities during the regular season could help Barrett build the foundation for a larger role in the Chargers’ defense moving forward.
