Cooper Flagg Leads Dallas Mavericks Past Cleveland Cavaliers 130 to 120 in Cleveland Bounce Back Win

CLEVELAND — Cooper Flagg recorded 27 points, 10 assists, and six rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers 130 - 120 on Sunday afternoon, delivering a decisive response two days after a 33 point loss in the same matchup.

The victory marked a breaking update for Dallas, which had lost seven consecutive games against Cleveland and entered the contest with only one win in its previous ten games. The result also highlighted the growing impact of Flagg, the first overall selection in the 2025 NBA Draft, who continues to expand his role within the Mavericks offense during his rookie season in the National Basketball Association.

Flagg shot 10 of 17 from the field and controlled the pace for Dallas throughout the second half. It marked the 12th game this season in which the rookie has scored at least 27 points, reinforcing his early emergence as a primary offensive option.

Naji Marshall added 25 points while P. J. Washington contributed 20 points and 11 rebounds, giving Dallas three players with at least 20 points. The balanced scoring helped the Mavericks regain momentum after Friday’s 138 - 105 defeat in Cleveland.

Dallas created separation through transition scoring and ball security. Cleveland committed 16 turnovers, which resulted in 25 Mavericks points and shifted the possession battle during critical stretches.

The first half remained tightly contested with 11 lead changes and seven ties before Dallas carried a narrow 60 - 59 advantage into halftime.

The Mavericks seized control early in the third quarter. Dallas opened the period with seven consecutive points and extended the lead to 78 - 67 following a three point basket from Ryan Nembhard with 7:20 remaining in the quarter. Cleveland briefly trimmed the deficit to seven before Dallas responded with a 10 - 2 run late in the period to maintain momentum entering the fourth.

Rookie guard John Poulakidas delivered a key performance in only his second NBA appearance. The Yale product, who signed a two way contract with Dallas on March 1, scored 10 points including eight during the third quarter. His scoring burst provided additional depth for a Mavericks roster that has relied on young contributors during recent injuries and lineup adjustments.

Dallas built a 21 point lead early in the fourth quarter before Cleveland mounted a late push behind Donovan Mitchell, who finished with 26 points. Max Strus added 24 points in his season debut after missing Cleveland’s first 67 games with a broken left foot.

Strus sustained a Jones fracture during offseason training and underwent surgery on Aug. 26. His return represents an important timeline development for Cleveland as the team evaluates its rotation heading toward the final stretch of the regular season.

The outcome carries potential playoff implications for both teams. Cleveland remains among the leading contenders in the Eastern Conference standings but continues to evaluate lineup consistency following several injury absences. Dallas, meanwhile, is seeking stability in the Western Conference race while integrating young talent led by Flagg.

The Mavericks next travel to face the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday. Cleveland will continue its road schedule Tuesday against the Milwaukee Bucks as both teams look to build momentum during the closing weeks of the regular season.
