Courtland Sutton has been a steady presence for the Denver Broncos since he was selected in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft. After battling through injuries and inconsistent quarterback play earlier in his career, Sutton put together one of his finest seasons yet in 2024 — and now he stands on the brink of history. Sutton's 2024 campaign saw him post career-high numbers in receptions with 81, while his 1,081 receiving yards and 8 touchdowns both ranked as the second-best totals of his career. Though he may not be viewed as a prototypical No. 1 receiver across the league, Sutton proved himself time and again in clutch moments for Denver. His reliability and production have turned him into a foundational piece of the Broncos’ offense — and perhaps more importantly, a name worth remembering in the team’s record books.

Climbing the Leaderboard

After his 2024 performance, Sutton now has 5,340 career receiving yards, which places him 11th all-time in Denver Broncos history, just behind Emmanuel Sanders. But the exciting part? He’s within striking distance of the top-5 — a feat that would put him among the franchise's elite.

Broncos All-Time Receiving Yard Leaders (Top 5):

  1. Rod Smith – 11,389 yards

  2. Demaryius Thomas – 9,055 yards

  3. Shannon Sharpe – 8,439 yards

  4. Lionel Taylor – 6,872 yards

  5. Ed McCaffrey – 6,200 yards

If Sutton delivers another 1,000-yard season in 2025 — something he's done twice before — he would leapfrog several notable names including Sanders, Haven Moses, Vance Johnson, Riley Odoms, Steve Watson, and finally McCaffrey, pushing him into the fifth spot all-time.

Even if Sutton doesn't reach the 1,000-yard mark, a modest season of 861 yards would still get him there. Given his current trajectory and role in Denver’s offense, it’s a very attainable goal.

Looking Further Ahead

If Sutton stays healthy and remains with the Broncos beyond this season, there’s reason to believe he could aim even higher. Passing Lionel Taylor (6,872 yards) would likely take another full season of production, and from there, the trio of Sharpe, Thomas, and Rod Smith awaits — all of whom surpassed the 8,000-yard mark.

While catching Rod Smith’s franchise record of 11,389 yards may be a long shot, Sutton reaching the top-3 all-time is a real possibility if he maintains his pace over the next few years.

What’s Next?

There’s also a contract storyline brewing. Sutton, now in the final stages of his current deal, could be in line for a third contract with the franchise. If the Broncos extend him this offseason — which seems likely — Sutton will have another opportunity to cement his place in team history and potentially finish his career as a lifelong Bronco.

Legacy in the Making

Courtland Sutton might not have the flashiest profile or the biggest media spotlight, but what he does have is consistency, toughness, and an ever-growing resume. With each catch, each yard, and each touchdown, he inches closer to being one of the greatest wide receivers to ever wear the orange and blue.

If 2025 mirrors his recent performance, Broncos fans may soon see Sutton’s name etched permanently into the upper echelon of franchise history.
