LONDON — Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder admitted on Wednesday that his upcoming fight against Derek Chisora is more important for him than it is for his opponent, as he attempts to reestablish himself in the heavyweight title picture. Chisora (36–13, 23 KOs) and Wilder (44–4, 43 KOs) are set to meet on April 4 at London’s O2 Arena, marking the 49th professional bout for both fighters. Chisora has stated that the fight will be the final contest of his career regardless of the outcome, while Wilder remains focused on earning another opportunity to compete for a world championship. Wilder previously held the WBC heavyweight title for five years and successfully defended it ten times. However, recent struggles — including four losses in his last six fights — have made the matchup with Chisora a pivotal moment in his career. “I need this fight,” Wilder said during a press conference. “I need to see where I stand after rebuilding myself. This is a must-win situation, and it has to be decisive.” Wilder emphasized that a knockout victory is essential if he hopes to move closer to a potential bout with unified heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk. While discussions with Usyk’s team had taken place, negotiations for the Chisora fight progressed more quickly after multiple dates fell through late last year.

Despite both fighters being known for fiery pre-fight antics, Wednesday’s press conference remained respectful, with each boxer highlighting their mutual admiration. Still, both acknowledged that their friendship would be set aside once they enter the ring. “When fight night comes, that switch flips,” Wilder said. “We’ll be enemies in the ring.” Chisora echoed the sentiment while explaining that he prefers a respectful buildup rather than manufactured hostility. He added that he hopes to end his career on a high note and expressed appreciation for Wilder as both a fighter and a friend. With Wilder seeking redemption and Chisora preparing for his final appearance, the April showdown carries high stakes for both men — even if their motivations differ.
