In a dominant performance in Saint Louis, Missouri, the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) defeated Jamaica 4-0 in an international friendly on Tuesday night. The victory marked the team’s second straight clean sheet under new head coach Emma Hayes and highlighted the emergence of young stars Ally Sentnor and Lynn Biyendolo as key contributors to the national team’s future. The U.S. came into the match off the momentum of a 3-0 win over China and maintained complete control throughout the game, registering 23 shot attempts to Jamaica’s two, with 82.4% possession and ten shots on target (Author). The team also earned 12 corner kicks, emphasizing their offensive pressure and tactical execution. Ally Sentnor scored twice in the first half, continuing her rapid rise at the senior level. Her first goal came after a well-placed long ball from Lily Yohannes found Emily Fox, who set up Sentnor for a composed finish. Sentnor added a second goal before halftime with a simple left-footed strike after capitalizing on a defensive error. The 21-year-old Utah Royals forward now has four goals in her international career and was named U.S. Soccer’s 2024 Young Player of the Year. Lynn Biyendolo made her presence known after coming off the bench in the second half, quickly scoring from close range after a corner kick and later adding a second goal with a solo run and calm finish from an Avery Patterson cross. “She always contributes to the team’s performance in a profound way,” Hayes said after the match. “She could have had a hat trick coming off the bench”.
Veteran center back Becky Sauerbrunn was honored in a heartfelt pregame ceremony in her hometown. With 219 career caps, two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles, and an Olympic gold medal, Sauerbrunn has had a legendary career. Now retired, she was presented with a cake and received a standing ovation from fans. Sauerbrunn, currently expecting her first child, provided commentary during the broadcast. Another highlight was the return of Naomi Girma to the U.S. lineup. After recovering from injury, the Chelsea defender made her 44th start and helped anchor the backline to a 27th career clean sheet. Hayes praised her impact, saying, “Naomi is like getting the Rolls-Royce out of the garage. She brings a level of composure and decision-making in deeper spaces that’s just so underrated”. Goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce recorded her third straight shutout as Hayes tests options to replace longtime No. 1 Alyssa Naeher, who retired last year. Looking ahead, the USWNT has no major tournaments this summer but will face the Republic of Ireland in two friendlies at the end of June and then Canada on July 6. With Hayes emphasizing calm, control, and squad rotation, the U.S. looks poised to build depth and identity ahead of future competitions.
