ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Philadelphia Eagles secured a hard-fought 13-12 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a thrilling matchup of playoff contenders. The game came down to a missed 2-point conversion attempt by Buffalo’s Josh Allen with just 5 seconds left. Allen’s pass sailed over the head of Khalil Shakir in the back of the end zone, sealing the win for the Eagles. After the game, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni expressed satisfaction with the win despite the team’s struggles in the second half. "Winning's hard in this league, and I’m always going to enjoy a win," Sirianni said. "If you come out of this and you’re just thinking about all the negative things that happened, then it’s just a miserable existence."
The win helped the NFC East champion Eagles (11-5) lock in the No. 3 seed in the playoffs, as they improved to 7-3 in one-score games. This also made them the first NFL team since the 1987 Patriots to win multiple games without completing a pass in the second half. Despite their victory, the Eagles’ offense struggled, posting just one first down and 17 yards over five second-half possessions. Buffalo (11-5) had already secured a playoff berth but dropped to the No. 7 seed in the AFC. After losing to the Eagles, the Bills also saw New England clinch the AFC East title.
Quarterback Josh Allen, who had been shut out for nearly 55 minutes, led a late rally for Buffalo by rushing for two touchdowns in the final 5:11. His second touchdown came on a 1-yard "tush push" on fourth-and-goal, following a replay review that determined tight end Dawson Knox’s elbow was just short of the goal line. Buffalo coach Sean McDermott opted to go for a 2-point conversion rather than tie the game, but Allen’s pass under pressure from linebacker Jalyx Hunt was off target, sealing the Eagles’ victory. "I just missed it," Allen said of the failed 2-point try. "Rolling left, got to get him a better ball." Dallas Goedert caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Jalen Hurts to give Philadelphia its only touchdown, while Jake Elliott contributed with field goals from 28 and 47 yards. Hurts finished the game with 110 passing yards, going 13 of 27 with one touchdown. His completion rate in the second half dropped to 0 for 7. Philadelphia’s defense was critical in preserving the win, with defensive lineman Jalen Carter playing a key role. Carter, in his return after missing three games due to shoulder injuries, blocked an extra-point attempt after Allen’s first touchdown, helping maintain the Eagles’ slim lead. Carter also recorded a sack and led the team with three quarterback hits. "Just a big-time player who makes big plays," Sirianni said of Carter.
Allen, who threw for 262 yards and ran for two touchdowns, reflected on the game’s outcome. "It just comes down to us executing, making one more play than they did," he said. "And obviously we saw that we didn’t make that last play."
Both teams were missing key players due to injury. The Eagles were without linebacker Nakobe Dean (hamstring), while the Bills were missing linebackers Terrel Bernard (calf) and defensive tackles DaQuan Jones (calf) and Jordan Phillips (ankle), as well as safety Jordan Poyer (hamstring) and tight end Dalton Kincaid (knee).
Philadelphia will host Washington next weekend, while the Bills will look to regroup before the start of the playoffs.
