SAN ANTONIO — The Minnesota Timberwolves got an unexpected boost Monday night, and it made all the difference. Anthony Edwards returned from injury ahead of schedule to score 18 points, including 11 in the fourth quarter, as Minnesota edged the San Antonio Spurs 104–102 in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Edwards, who had been expected to miss at least the first two games after suffering a bone bruise and hyperextended knee on April 25, instead delivered a clutch performance that helped seal the win. His presence alone, teammates said, steadied the group down the stretch. “Nobody expected him to play,” said Mike Conley. “That just shows his commitment—not just to the game, but to his teammates.” Minnesota needed every bit of that effort to withstand a dominant defensive showing from Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs’ star recorded 11 points, 15 rebounds, and a postseason-record 12 blocks, becoming just the third player since 1973–74 to post a playoff triple-double that includes blocks. Despite Wembanyama’s impact, San Antonio fell just short in the closing moments. After a steal by Devin Vassell led to a layup from Dylan Harper, the Spurs cut the deficit to two with 31 seconds left. Minnesota’s Julius Randle missed a late shot, but Julian Champagnie couldn’t convert a potential game-winning three at the buzzer.

“We have to be better,” Wembanyama said. “We’ll look at what needs fixing and come back ready.” Randle led Minnesota with 21 points and 10 rebounds, while Harper scored 18 for San Antonio. Champagnie and Stephon Castle added 17 points apiece. Edwards came off the bench, entering midway through the first quarter with Minnesota trailing. He quickly made his presence known, knocking down a step-back three early and shouting toward the Spurs bench, “I’m back!” He backed it up, shooting 8-for-13 in just 25 minutes. Minnesota played without Donte DiVincenzo (Achilles) and Ayo Dosunmu (calf), making Edwards’ return even more significant. “I know just being out there helps,” Edwards said. “It takes pressure off everybody.” Game 2 is set for Wednesday night in San Antonio, where the Spurs will try to bounce back after letting a historic defensive performance slip away.
