How Nikola Jokić’s Injury May Impact the MVP Race.

The Kia MVP race could see significant shifts following the recent hyperextended left knee injury sustained by Nikola Jokić. This injury raises questions about the 65-game minimum eligibility for the MVP award, a rule that has been in place to ensure players demonstrate consistency and availability throughout the season. The NBA implemented this requirement to ensure that candidates for the award meet a certain threshold of games played. While the rule has faced criticism, especially in light of injuries, it remains a fundamental part of MVP eligibility. Historically, only Bill Walton, during the 1977-78 season, won the MVP while playing fewer than 65 games in an 82-game season. However, in shortened seasons, players like Giannis Antetokounmpo (2019-2020), Karl Malone (1998-99), and LeBron James (2011-12) were able to capture the award. Thus, while the 65-game rule aims to ensure fairness, there are occasional exceptions that stir debate.

Jokić, who was widely regarded as the frontrunner for this season's MVP, was diagnosed with a hyperextended knee after a mishap in Miami. While the diagnosis suggested the best-case scenario, Jokić will miss all of January, which could impact his chances of reaching the 65-game requirement for MVP eligibility. Known for his durability, Jokić had played fewer than 70 games only once in his career (including shortened seasons). However, the possibility that he may not meet the threshold for this season has led to questions about whether he should be penalized due to an unfortunate injury. Until it is mathematically impossible for Jokić to reach 65 games, he will remain at the top of the MVP race. With the uncertainty surrounding his return, the MVP race remains open, and Jokić will continue to hold the top spot until further notice. In the meantime, other MVP contenders are making a strong case for the award. A notable matchup looms on January 6 when Jalen Brunson and the New York Knicks face Cade Cunningham and the Detroit Pistons. Both players are in the MVP conversation, and their performance could impact their respective teams' position in the standings and their individual MVP chances.
