Iowa State overcame a slow start to defeat No. 9 Kansas 74-56 on Saturday, snapping the Jayhawks’ eight-game winning streak and asserting control early in the Big 12 showdown.
Milan Momcilovic led the Cyclones with 18 points, while Tamin Lipsey, Joshua Jefferson, Blake Buchanan and Jamarion Bateman each added 11 points. Iowa State (22-3, 9-3 Big 12) opened the second half on a 20-7 run, making six consecutive three-pointers in the first five and a half minutes to put the Jayhawks away.
Kansas (19-6, 9-3) struggled from the floor, shooting 31.6 percent in the second half and connecting on just one of eight three point attempts. The Jayhawks committed 13 turnovers, including 10 in the first half, as Iowa State’s defense forced mistakes and limited open looks. Melvin Council Jr. led Kansas with 15 points, and Flory Bidunga contributed 11. Freshman Darryn Peterson returned from injury to score 10 points in 24 minutes.
The Cyclones trailed only 6-2 despite making just one of their first ten field goals thanks to early defensive stops. Once the offense settled, Iowa State went on a 20-2 run over five minutes later in the first half to take a 36-22 lead at 1:37 remaining in the half. This was the seventh top 10 matchup in the series history between Iowa State and Kansas, with the teams having split the previous six games.
Iowa State begins a challenging stretch with four games against ranked opponents, starting Monday with a home matchup against No. 3 Houston.
Kansas will look to bounce back when they visit Oklahoma State on Wednesday.
