Japan Airlines Highlights Shohei Ohtani in 2026.

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers is set to represent Team Japan once again in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, aiming to defend the championship he helped secure in 2023. Since that historic tournament, Ohtani’s career has reached even greater heights, as he has added two World Series titles and back-to-back National League MVP awards to his already impressive résumé. Following the announcement that Ohtani would be included among Japan’s listed pitchers, Japan Airlines released a visually striking commercial featuring the superstar as a samurai. In the advertisement, Ohtani is shown wielding a sword and dramatically drawing it in a scene that quickly captured the attention of fans worldwide. The video spread rapidly across social media, earning widespread praise for its cinematic style and symbolism. Members of the baseball community, including Dodgers Nation contributor Noel Sanchez, shared enthusiastic reactions to the commercial online, further boosting its popularity. The ad reinforces Ohtani’s cultural significance in Japan while building excitement ahead of the international tournament.

Despite the buzz, questions remain about Ohtani’s role on the field. Recovering from elbow surgery in September 2023, he returned to pitching in June and continued to contribute throughout the postseason, even while pitching on short rest. In a November interview, Ohtani explained that his usage in the WBC had not yet been finalized, noting that he was still working toward regaining his pre-surgery form. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also addressed the situation during the MLB winter meetings, expressing hope that Ohtani would focus primarily on hitting rather than pitching. Ultimately, both the Dodgers and Ohtani are expected to evaluate his condition during spring training before making a final decision.

Given Japan’s strong pitching depth and comparatively lighter offensive lineup, Ohtani’s greatest value may come as a hitter.

Regardless of whether he takes the mound, his presence in the lineup will be central to Japan’s quest for another World Baseball Classic title.
