Jaylen Brown, a guard for the Boston Celtics, was ejected during the second quarter of Boston’s 125–116 loss to the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. The incident occurred after Brown received two consecutive technical fouls while arguing a non-call with game officials. The sequence began when Brown appeared to lose his footing and step out of bounds while being defended by Spurs guard Stephon Castle. The play resulted in a turnover, but Brown believed he had been pushed out of bounds and strongly protested the decision. According to crew chief Tyler Ford, officials did not see any illegal contact during the play. As Brown continued to argue the call while heading down the court, Ford issued the first technical foul. When Brown persisted in confronting the officials, referee Suyash Mehta assessed a second technical foul, which resulted in Brown’s immediate ejection. Teammate Sam Hauser attempted to restrain Brown as tensions escalated. Ford later explained that the first technical foul was issued because Brown was “aggressively pointing and using profanity” toward officials. The second technical foul was called when Brown continued approaching the referee while arguing the decision. Boston head coach Joe Mazzulla defended Brown after the game, expressing understanding of his frustration.
Mazzulla humorously compared the situation to a strict high school principal who is willing to remove a disruptive student rather than relying on someone else to enforce discipline. Despite the lighthearted comparison, Mazzulla emphasized that he supported Brown’s reaction. At the time of the ejection, Boston led 51–49. Brown finished the night with eight points, two rebounds, seven assists, and one steal in just 13 minutes of play. The teams went into halftime tied at 58. Following the game, Brown voiced his frustration on social media, writing that the incident reflected ongoing issues he has previously raised regarding officiating. Brown has been openly critical of referees this season and was fined earlier in the year for comments about officiating. Despite the ejection, Brown has been a key contributor for the Celtics this season. Entering the game, the five-time NBA All-Star was averaging 28.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 5.1 assists across 57 games.
