Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has made it clear that freshman quarterback Julian “JuJu” Lewis will see the field in the Buffaloes' Week 2 game against Delaware. Despite the team’s commitment to Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter as the starter, Sanders confirmed Tuesday that Lewis will make his collegiate debut in some capacity. “He’s playing. He’s playing this week for sure,” Sanders said in his press conference, keeping the specifics vague but promising fans a glimpse of the highly touted freshman. “I know when I’m going to see him, you just don’t know when you’re going to see him.” Colorado is coming off a narrow 27–20 loss to Georgia Tech in Week 1. Although the defense forced three early turnovers, the Buffaloes managed to convert those into only one touchdown. Salter completed 17 of 28 passes for 159 yards and a touchdown while adding 43 rushing yards and another score on the ground—his 12th career game with both a passing and rushing touchdown. Still, Sanders’ decision to incorporate Lewis signals both confidence in the freshman and a desire to energize the offense. A four-star recruit from Carrollton, Georgia, Lewis was ranked as the No. 10 quarterback in the 2025 class by 247Sports. Notably, he reclassified early and skipped his senior year of high school, bringing over 10,000 career passing yards with him to Boulder.
According to 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins, Lewis is a “new-age point guard” of the quarterback position—one who can distribute the football efficiently with accuracy, timing, and precision. While not a dynamic runner, Lewis is praised for his quick release, ability to read full-field progressions, and calm under pressure. Despite a smaller frame and limited deep-ball experience, analysts believe Lewis is capable of contributing from Day 1 in Colorado’s spread offense. FanDuel Sportsbook has the Buffaloes favored by 23.5 points over the Delaware Blue Hens, suggesting a likely opportunity for Lewis to get meaningful snaps, particularly if Colorado builds an early lead. Whether he enters the game in relief or on a scripted drive, all eyes will be on JuJu Lewis as he takes his first steps toward what Colorado hopes is a promising career in black and gold.
