LeBron James Says Knicks Were Once a Dream Free-Agent Destination.

LeBron James revealed Monday that the New York Knicks were among the teams he envisioned joining during free agency, but the franchise's championship run ultimately changed his thinking. Speaking at Philadelphia 76ers media day, James said his free-agent options included Philadelphia, Cleveland, Golden State, Miami and Minnesota. He also acknowledged that New York had been a team he imagined finishing his career with, particularly because of the opportunity to play at Madison Square Garden. James said the Knicks' championship victory over the San Antonio Spurs in June made joining New York difficult to consider. He believed the reaction to signing with the newly crowned champions would have created significant outside scrutiny. Despite deciding against the Knicks, James spoke highly of the organization and its players, specifically praising Jalen Brunson.

James will have at least two opportunities to return to Madison Square Garden during the 2026-27 regular season. Philadelphia is scheduled to visit New York on opening night, Oct. 20, with another matchup set for Feb. 27. The four-time NBA champion also said he plans to maintain residences in both New York and Philadelphia while beginning his next chapter with the 76ers.
