ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Yaxel Lendeborg finished with 18 points and nine rebounds as No. 3 Michigan defeated Ohio State 74–62 on Friday night. Morez Johnson added 12 points for the Wolverines, who improved to 18–1 overall and 8–1 in Big Ten play. Michigan took control of the game in the second half with a decisive 21–6 run after Ohio State had tied the score for the ninth time. The Buckeyes, now 13–6 overall and 5–3 in conference play, were unable to recover from the surge. Ohio State’s John Mobley Jr. led all scorers with 22 points, including 14 in the first half, as Michigan carried a narrow 33–30 lead into halftime. Early in the second half, Mobley hit a 3-pointer and assisted on Christoph Tilly’s 3-point basket to give the Buckeyes a six-point advantage, prompting Michigan coach Dusty May to call a timeout.
Following the break, the Wolverines responded with an 11–0 run that shifted momentum and turned a tightly contested matchup featuring 12 lead changes into a double-digit win. Freshman Trey McKenney contributed 12 points for Michigan, while Aday Mara added 11 points and four blocks. Tilly scored 17 points for Ohio State, and Bruce Thornton chipped in 10 before leaving the game late with an apparent ankle injury. Puff Johnson made his Buckeyes debut after becoming eligible through a temporary restraining order, marking his first appearance since transferring from Penn State after beginning his career at North Carolina.
The game also featured a ceremony honoring former Michigan star Trey Burke, the 2013 AP Player of the Year, whose No. 3 jersey was raised to the rafters at Crisler Center.
Ohio State will host Penn State on Monday night, while Michigan returns home to face No. 7 Nebraska on Tuesday.
