Maple Leafs Land Kirill Marchenko in Blockbuster Trade With Blue Jackets.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a major move just before the start of the 2026-27 NHL season, acquiring Columbus Blue Jackets forward Kirill Marchenko in a six-player trade announced Monday. Toronto is sending winger Matthew Knies, forward Steven Lorentz, defenseman Emil Andrae and a 2027 second-round draft pick to Columbus. In return, the Maple Leafs receive Marchenko, forward Miles Wood and goaltender Elvis Merzlikins. Marchenko, 26, has been one of Columbus' most productive goal scorers over the past three seasons. He led the Blue Jackets in goals in each of those seasons and has recorded 81 goals and 208 points in 233 games with the franchise. The Blue Jackets selected Marchenko with the 49th overall pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. Toronto expects him to join Auston Matthews on the team's top line. The trade comes after Marchenko's future in Columbus became a major storyline during the offseason. ESPN reported in June that Marchenko was seeking a change of scenery through his agent, Dan Milstein. After arriving at Blue Jackets training camp, Marchenko declined to provide a clear commitment about his future with the organization. Marchenko was permitted to negotiate a contract extension with Toronto before the trade was completed. The Maple Leafs subsequently signed him to a six-year extension carrying a $12.5 million annual salary-cap hit. He had one season remaining on his previous contract at a $3.85 million cap hit and was scheduled to become a restricted free agent next summer. Knies becomes the key piece heading back to Columbus. The 23-year-old winger is entering his fifth NHL season and is under contract through 2031. He posted 66 points, including 23 goals and 43 assists, in 79 games last season.

Knies was selected by Toronto 57th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft and has a contract with a $7.75 million average annual value. Lorentz, 30, provides Columbus with additional forward depth. He is signed through 2028 at a $1.35 million annual cap hit. Andrae, 24, is a defenseman who joined Toronto during the offseason after being acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers. His contract also runs through 2028. Wood, 31, joins Toronto as a veteran depth forward entering his 12th NHL season. He is under contract through 2029 with a $2.5 million annual cap hit. The goaltending side of the deal is more complicated for Toronto. Merzlikins, 32, spent much of his seven-year Columbus tenure as the team's primary starter before rookie Jet Greaves took over the crease last season. Merzlikins is in the final season of his contract, which carries a $5.4 million cap hit. However, he is currently out indefinitely after failing a physical at the beginning of training camp following shoulder surgery in August. Columbus will retain 18% of his salary as part of the transaction. The 2027 second-round pick included in the trade originally came to Toronto from the Seattle Kraken in a March 6 deal. The selection will be the later of Winnipeg's or Columbus' 2027 second-round picks.

The blockbuster gives Toronto another established scoring option alongside Matthews while Columbus adds a young, proven winger in Knies along with additional depth and a future draft asset.
