Murphy Condemns Uribe’s Celebration After Brewers Shut Out Cardinals.

MILWAUKEE — Tension lingered after the Milwaukee Brewers’ 6-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night, as Brewers manager Pat Murphy publicly criticized reliever Abner Uribe for an emotional on-field display following a key strikeout in the eighth inning.

Uribe escaped a jam by freezing Cardinals hitter Alec Burleson on a called third strike with runners aboard. After the inning ended, the hard-throwing reliever turned toward the Cardinals’ dugout and performed several WWE-style crotch chop gestures, prompting immediate attention from both teams. The Cardinals challenged the strike call, which replay review upheld as clipping the lower edge of the zone. Murphy said after the game that he was disappointed by Uribe’s reaction and made clear the behavior would not be accepted moving forward. “I was embarrassed by it,” Murphy said. “That’s not how we do things. It’s a 6-0 game, and there’s no reason for that kind of reaction.” The Brewers manager added that he had already spoken privately with Uribe and emphasized that the reliever’s emotions cannot interfere with the team’s standards. Murphy also pointed out how risky the moment could have become if the challenge had overturned the strikeout call. “If that gets reversed, he has to reset and continue pitching,” Murphy said. “At this level, one swing changes everything.” Uribe later issued an apology through an interpreter, saying he regretted his actions and understood they reflected poorly on the organization and his teammates. However, he also accused Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol of making gestures during the game that Uribe interpreted as suggesting Brewers hitters should be targeted. Uribe also referenced an earlier incident during pregame activities but declined to explain further details.

“Everyone knows I play with emotion,” Uribe said. “I apologize to my teammates, the coaches and the organization. But I also felt there were things happening from their side that crossed a line.” Marmol declined to engage publicly with Uribe’s accusations after the game, saying only that Milwaukee would handle its own player internally while St. Louis focused on its clubhouse. The brewing tension appeared earlier in the inning when Uribe threw a high fastball near Cardinals catcher Iván Herrera, leading to a brief exchange between the two players. Herrera later said he felt the celebration disrespected the entire Cardinals roster.

“If you have a problem with me, say it directly,” Herrera said. “Don’t disrespect the whole team.” Uribe has previously faced discipline for emotional outbursts on the mound.
