Since being selected first overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has consistently ranked among the league’s elite defenders. During the 2025 season, Garrett and the Denver Broncos defense have positioned themselves to challenge historic sack records. Garrett has totaled a career-best 22 sacks through 16 games. With one regular-season game remaining, he is just 0.5 sacks short of surpassing the NFL single-season record of 22.5, currently shared by Michael Strahan and T.J. Watt. His sack total exceeds that of at least one entire team this season, including the San Francisco 49ers.

Despite Cleveland’s offensive struggles and a 4–12 record, Garrett has delivered a standout campaign. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year and favorite to win the award again, Garrett has continued to dominate opposing quarterbacks even as the Browns secured another losing season. Earlier in the year, he requested a trade but later committed to the franchise with a record-setting contract extension worth an average of $40 million per year. Now, as he approaches his 30th birthday, Garrett is on the verge of making NFL history.

At the team level, the Denver Broncos defense has also been relentless. The unit has recorded 64 sacks in 16 games and could challenge the all-time single-season team record of 72, set by the 1984 Chicago Bears. Denver’s pass rush has been a collective effort, led by Nik Bonitto with 12.5 sacks. Jonathon Cooper, John Franklin-Myers, and Zach Allen have all made significant contributions as well.

As Week 18 approaches, Garrett will look to break the individual sack record against the Cincinnati Bengals, while the Broncos aim to close the gap on the team record in their matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
