No. 8 Penn State men’s lacrosse (10–5, 5–2 Big Ten) advanced to the next round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday with a 10–6 win over Army (13–4, 8–2 Patriot League), using a dominant defensive effort and timely scoring runs to separate in the second half.
Hunter Aquino led the Nittany Lions with a hat trick, pacing an offense that controlled possession for much of the afternoon. Penn State’s defense also played a decisive role, limiting Army to fewer than 30 total shots while forcing 13 turnovers from a typically efficient Black Knights attack. Penn State struck first just moments into the game when Aquino finished a cutting move from behind the cage for the opening goal. Army quickly responded to even the score, but the Nittany Lions regained control behind their transition game and early defensive pressure. Aquino added a second goal from distance before Michael Farone extended the lead to 3–1 after a forced Army turnover. The Black Knights answered again midway through the opening quarter, but Penn State closed the frame ahead 3–1 after setting the tone with aggressive defense and efficient ball movement. The second quarter featured stretches of sloppy play on both sides, with turnovers piling up early. Army briefly cut into the deficit with a pair of quick goals, but Penn State stabilized behind Andrew Beard, who scored twice in the half, including a key response goal to restore momentum. Luke Walstrum added another before halftime, sending the Nittany Lions into the break leading 6–3. Penn State controlled much of the statistical edge in the first half, outshooting Army 25–9 and winning the majority of faceoffs. However, clearing issues kept the game from fully breaking open.
Army opened the third quarter with a quick goal to trim the margin to two, but Penn State answered again when Aquino completed his hat trick off a turnover and transition opportunity. From there, the Nittany Lions’ defense tightened further, and neither team scored for the remainder of the quarter as Penn State carried a 7–4 lead into the fourth.
The Nittany Lions delivered the decisive blow early in the final period. After winning the opening faceoff, Penn State capitalized on sustained pressure, with Lehman finishing in front to push the lead to four. Shortly after, Farone added one of the game’s highlight moments, converting a behind-the-back finish to extend the advantage to 9–4. Brendan Leary later added his first goal of the season to make it 10–4, capping Penn State’s strongest stretch of the afternoon. Army managed a late push with back-to-back goals in the final minutes, but the deficit proved too large to overcome. Penn State closed the game with controlled possession to run out the clock and secure the 10–6 victory. With the win, Penn State moves on in the NCAA Tournament, propelled by a balanced offensive effort and a defense that dictated the pace throughout the matchup.
