Stailee Heard delivered a dominant all around performance Sunday as Oklahoma State overwhelmed No. 19 Iowa State 86 to 58 in Stillwater, extending the Cyclones losing streak to five games and reshaping the Big 12 race.
Heard finished with 18 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 assists, recording the first triple double of her career and only the third in Oklahoma State program history. The junior has surged offensively in recent weeks and is averaging 20.8 points over her last four games, emerging as one of the conference most productive two way players.
Oklahoma State seized control midway through the second quarter with a decisive 13 to 0 run that pushed the lead to 16 points. The Cowgirls dominated the period, scoring 30 points on 61 percent shooting and taking a commanding 43 to 21 lead into halftime. Micah Gray led the second quarter charge with 12 points, including 3 three pointers, as Iowa State struggled to generate clean looks.
The Cyclones briefly cut into the deficit early in the third quarter, trimming the margin to 51 to 35, but any momentum was quickly erased. Haleigh Timmer sparked a 15 to 0 Oklahoma State run with 10 points during the stretch, and the Cowgirls closed the quarter ahead 66 to 35, effectively ending the contest.
Audi Crooks and Jada Williams were the only Iowa State players to score more than three points entering the fourth quarter. Crooks, the nation leading scorer at 27.6 points per game, was limited to 15 points and seven rebounds. Williams matched her with 15 points and added seven assists. Iowa State entered the game ranked second nationally with 21.9 assists per game but managed only 11 as Oklahoma State defensive pressure disrupted ball movement throughout the afternoon.
Timmer finished with 16 points for Oklahoma State, Gray added 15, and Lena Girardi contributed 11 off the bench. The Cowgirls improved to 16 and 4 overall and 5 and 2 in Big 12 play, while extending their home dominance to 28 and 2 over the past two seasons at Gallagher Iba Arena.
Iowa State fell to 14 and 5 overall and 2 and 5 in conference play. The Cyclones opened the season with 14 straight wins and climbed as high as No. 10 in the AP Top 25 before the current skid, which now includes their most lopsided loss of the season.
The result serves as a significant breaking update in the Big 12 standings, highlighting Oklahoma State upward trajectory and Iowa State recent struggles against physical defensive teams. What this means moving forward is increased urgency for the Cyclones as they attempt to stabilize their season, while the Cowgirls continue to build a strong postseason resume.
Iowa State will look to regroup when it hosts Cincinnati on Wednesday.
Oklahoma State next travels to face Colorado on Sunday as it continues conference play with growing momentum.
