Professional football players often turn to golf as a way to unwind, and Denver Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II is the latest NFL star to catch the golf bug. While many athletes only play casually during the offseason, Surtain has revealed that his interest in the sport has grown into a serious commitment over the past year. During an appearance on the podcast Closed On Sundays, Surtain explained that what began as a recreational activity has now become something he wants to improve at competitively. He shared that his girlfriend played a major role in encouraging his growing interest by gifting him several golf-related items for Christmas, including training equipment and a travel kit for his clubs. These gifts, he said, have motivated him to take the sport more seriously and focus on improving his performance. Surtain acknowledged that he is still developing his skills on the course, admitting that he is not yet a strong golfer. However, he described how quickly the game becomes addictive once players start to see improvement. According to Surtain, working with a coach and experiencing even small successes can make golfers eager to keep coming back for more. The cornerback also reflected on enjoying a meaningful holiday season with his family, despite the demands of the NFL schedule. After securing a road victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, Surtain was able to celebrate Christmas and spend time with loved ones, making the holiday even more memorable.
Golf has long been known as a sport that appeals to athletes across generations, and Surtain’s experience reflects a familiar pattern among newcomers. Many players find themselves chasing the satisfaction of a single great shot, which often leads to a lasting passion for the game. As Surtain continues to refine his skills, it seems likely that golf will remain a major part of his offseason routine—and perhaps one day earn him a spot in a celebrity tournament alongside other NFL standouts.
