Manchester United earned a crucial 1–0 victory over Newcastle United at Old Trafford on 26 December 2025 in the Premier League’s only Boxing Day fixture. The match was decided by a spectacular first-half volley from Patrick Dorgu, ending United’s two-month wait for a home league win. The result came despite United missing seven first-team players, including captain Bruno Fernandes. Under the leadership of head coach Ruben Amorim, United fielded a makeshift lineup and adopted a disciplined tactical approach. Amorim initially set his side up in a back four before transitioning to a back five late in the match to protect the narrow lead. The tactical adjustments proved effective as United absorbed pressure and limited Newcastle’s attacking threat. The decisive moment arrived in the 36th minute. Following a flick-on by Benjamin Šeško, Dorgu controlled a loose ball outside the penalty area and struck a powerful volley. Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale managed to get a hand to the shot, but the effort proved too strong and crossed the goal line. It marked Dorgu’s first goal for the club and the defining moment of the match.

Deployed out of position on the right wing due to injuries, Dorgu delivered an impressive all-around performance. In addition to his goal, he contributed defensively and played a key role in United’s attacking build-up. Earlier in the half, his work helped create a chance for Šeško, whose attempt struck the crossbar. Newcastle controlled possession for large spells but struggled to convert opportunities. Lewis Hall came closest to an equalizer in the 73rd minute when his long-range effort struck the crossbar. Bruno Guimarães also had a penalty appeal dismissed following a VAR review, further adding to Newcastle’s frustration. Defensively, United were solid throughout the match. Goalkeeper Senne Lammens made several important saves, including stops from Guimarães’ header and a late long-range attempt. The return of Lisandro Martínez was another positive for United, as the defender made his first start in 327 days and captained the side to only their second clean sheet of the season.

The victory provides Manchester United with much-needed momentum as they head into a demanding run of fixtures. With injured players expected to return soon, Amorim will hope this result marks a turning point. Newcastle, meanwhile, were left to reflect on missed chances and another disappointing away performance.

Final Score:Manchester United 1–0 Newcastle United

Goal:Dorgu 36′
