PHILADELPHIA — Cam Payne scored 13 of his game-high 32 points in the fourth quarter, and rookie VJ Edgecombe contributed 21 points in his return to the lineup as the Philadelphia 76ers rallied to defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 139-129 on Tuesday night. Philadelphia played without All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey and Joel Embiid. Maxey is expected to miss at least three weeks due to a tendon injury in his right-hand small finger. Edgecombe assumed point guard duties in Maxey’s absence after missing three consecutive games with a lumbar contusion. He energized the team with a highlight-reel two-handed dunk midway through the second quarter. Kelly Oubre Jr. added 31 points and 12 rebounds, while Quentin Grimes scored 22 points for the 76ers. For Memphis, Ty Jerome tallied 26 points, but the Grizzlies have now lost five consecutive games and 12 of their last 15. Jerome’s 3-pointer with 9:34 remaining gave Memphis a 115-107 lead before Philadelphia responded with a 12-0 run to take a 119-115 lead, capped by Payne’s three-pointer with 6:29 left. Dominick Barlow extended the lead with a three-point play that made it 128-117 with under five minutes remaining. Jerome was later ejected after receiving two technical fouls with 1:18 left.
Additional absences for the 76ers included Embiid (right oblique strain) and Paul George (NBA suspension). Embiid missed his fifth straight game, while George remains a couple of weeks away from returning after serving a 25-game suspension for violating the league’s anti-drug program. Memphis entered the game seven games behind the final Western Conference playoff spot and had more players out (11) than dressed (10). The teams will meet new opponents on Thursday: the Grizzlies host the Dallas Mavericks, while the 76ers travel to face the Detroit Pistons.
