Payton Says Broncos’ Backup Quarterback Evaluation Remains Open During Training Camp.

The Denver Broncos are continuing to evaluate their quarterback depth behind starter Bo Nix, but head coach Sean Payton made it clear that the team has not officially declared a competition for the backup role. Jarrett Stidham and Sam Ehlinger have continued splitting repetitions throughout training camp as the Broncos assess their options behind Nix. While Payton previously indicated there would be an opportunity for competition at the position, he said the current rotation is simply part of the team’s evaluation process. “There’s been no official battle,” Payton said. Stidham entered camp as Denver’s returning backup quarterback after serving in that role last season, while Ehlinger enters the competition after spending 2025 as the team’s third quarterback. Both have received opportunities to showcase their development as the Broncos continue working through their preseason preparations. Payton has been pleased with Ehlinger’s early progress, pointing to his athleticism, decision-making, and ability to adjust within the offense as areas that have stood out. “He gets in and out of some plays maybe,” Payton said. “He can move. I like how he’s looked. I think he’s done a lot of good things. He’s fitting right in.” The quarterback evaluation has also been impacted by changes along the offensive line. With center Luke Wattenberg sidelined, Alex Forsyth has taken first-team reps, while Calvin Throckmorton has worked with the second unit and rookie Gavin Ortega has handled third-team snaps. As training camp continues, the Broncos will use preseason opportunities to further evaluate their quarterback depth and determine the best fit behind Nix heading into the regular season.
