SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Jadarian Price scored four touchdowns, including a 100-yard kickoff return, as No. 24 Notre Dame earned its first win of the season, defeating Purdue 56-30 on Saturday. The Irish extended their dominance over the Boilermakers, winning the matchup for the 10th straight time and improving their series lead to 61-26-2. After a rough 0-2 start against No. 4 Miami and No. 10 Texas A&M, Notre Dame surged in the third quarter with three touchdowns to break a 35-23 halftime lead. Coach Freeman stressed accountability to his team, pushing players to recognize the urgency of the season.
Price rushed for three touchdowns on nine carries for 74 yards and added the electrifying 100-yard kickoff return before halftime, finishing with 216 all-purpose yards. Jeremiyah Love contributed 157 rushing yards on 19 carries, including scoring runs of 46 and 1 yard. Quarterback C.J. Carr was efficient, completing 10 of 12 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
Purdue quarterback Ryan Browne threw for 250 yards and one touchdown. Early in the first quarter, a trick play saw running back Devin Mockobee connect with Browne for a 14-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7. Purdue coach Barry Odom lamented Price’s kickoff return, saying it “really hurt us.”
A lightning delay of 1 hour and 54 minutes late in the second quarter slowed the game, marking the Boilermakers’ second consecutive contest impacted by severe weather.
Takeaways:
Notre Dame: The defense improved after struggling in the first two games, recording two interceptions and two sacks against Purdue. After allowing 23 first-half points, the Irish limited the Boilermakers to a single touchdown in the second half.
Purdue: The defense, strong in early games, gave up nearly 1,000 yards in the last two contests.
