Reid Unfazed by Mahomes' Daring Plays: A Behind-the-Back Pass Just Another Day at Practice

Andy Reid might be the only one not awestruck by Patrick Mahomes and his incredible trick throws.

The veteran coach doesn’t mind Mahomes’ unconventional plays, as long as they meet one condition.

“I heard he blamed Kelce for the broken play, but that’s fine. He does it in practice every day, and I’m okay with it as long as it’s a completion,” Reid said.

Mahomes’ latest jaw-dropping play occurred during the Chiefs’ 24-23 loss to the Lions on August 17.

Facing a third-and-three at the Lions’ 33-yard line, the two-time MVP casually tossed a behind-the-back pass to Travis Kelce for an eight-yard gain, keeping the drive alive.

Mahomes told NFL Network he threw the pass "out of spite" because Kelce didn’t run the right route.

“I didn’t do it to show off,” Mahomes said after the game. “I was just frustrated. I was like, ‘Why didn’t you run that route?’ It just worked out.”

Reid clearly trusts his three-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback to make plays, even unconventional ones.

“Look, they do it in basketball all the time, several times a game,” Reid said. “It’s not a big deal to throw behind the back. I don’t think I’ve seen it in a game before, but I see it every day in practice.”

Reid is also known for his creative play-calling, with Kansas City frequently using unique plays and formations throughout the season.

The Chiefs will begin their quest for a third consecutive Super Bowl title when they open the NFL season against the Ravens on September 5.
