The Dallas Cowboys may have found another young playmaker to watch this preseason.
Rookie wide receiver Camden Brown delivered one of the strongest performances of the night as Dallas defeated the Seattle Seahawks 17-7 on Saturday. Brown caught two touchdown passes, including an impressive one-handed grab, helping the Cowboys pull away after falling behind early. Seattle opened the game with the better start. With starting quarterback Sam Darnold sitting out, Drew Lock led the Seahawks on a 13-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Montorie Foster Jr. The score gave Seattle an early 7-0 advantage. Dallas responded in the second quarter when kicker Brandon Aubrey connected on a 29-yard field goal. Seattle had an opportunity to extend its lead on the following possession, but Jason Myers missed a 45-yard field goal. That opened the door for Brown. Quarterback Sam Howell connected with the rookie for a 39-yard touchdown, giving Dallas a 10-7 lead before halftime. Brown made the play even more memorable by going airborne and securing the football with one hand. The rookie continued his strong night after halftime. On Dallas' opening drive of the third quarter, Joe Milton found Brown on a 2-yard fade in the back corner of the end zone. The touchdown extended the Cowboys' advantage to 17-7, which became the final score. Brown entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent after beginning his college career at Auburn and later transferring to Georgia Southern. At 6-foot-2 and 204 pounds, he has used his size and athleticism to make an impression throughout Cowboys training camp. His preseason performance gave Dallas another look at what he could potentially bring to the receiving corps. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer praised Brown's ability to carry his practice success into game action while emphasizing that the rookie still needs to continue developing.
Dallas also received encouraging performances from its quarterbacks. Milton completed 12 of 15 passes for 107 yards and a touchdown, while Howell finished 8 of 12 for 94 yards and a score. Both are competing for the backup quarterback position behind Dak Prescott. Seattle rotated its quarterbacks throughout the game. Lock completed 9 of 13 passes for 40 yards and a touchdown, while Jalen Milroe went 5 of 8 for 36 yards. Neither team established a dominant rushing attack. Cowboys running back Jaydon Blue finished with 19 yards on eight carries, while Malik Davis added 39 yards on seven attempts. Seattle's George Holani led all Seahawks rushers with 42 yards on 12 carries. Defensively, Seattle linebacker Tyrice Knight recorded 10 tackles, all coming in the first half. Curtis Robinson led Dallas with eight tackles.
The game was not particularly clean from a discipline standpoint. Dallas and Seattle combined for 21 penalties totaling 174 yards, an area both teams will look to improve as the preseason continues. Seattle also dealt with injuries during the matchup. Offensive tackle Amari Kight left in the second quarter with a leg injury, while edge rusher Jared Ivey briefly entered the injury tent before returning. For Dallas, running back Phil Mafah exited with a chest injury and did not return, although Schottenheimer indicated after the game that Mafah was doing OK. For the Cowboys, however, one of the biggest stories coming out of Seattle was Brown. An undrafted rookie fighting for an NFL opportunity, he turned two catches into touchdowns and strengthened his case for a roster spot. Dallas will continue its preseason schedule on the road against the Arizona Cardinals on Aug. 22. Seattle will travel to face the Tennessee Titans on Aug. 23.
