The Saskatchewan Roughriders have added one of the top Canadian defensive prospects from the 2026 CFL Draft, officially signing National defensive back Malcolm Bell as the organization continues strengthening its secondary ahead of the new season.
Bell arrives in Saskatchewan carrying significant expectations after being selected ninth overall in the 2026 CFL Canadian Draft. The Montreal native enters the professional ranks following an impressive collegiate career that included productive stops with both Michigan State Spartans football and UConn Huskies football.
For the Roughriders, the signing represents another important investment in Canadian talent as teams across the CFL continue placing added value on versatile National players capable of contributing immediately on defense and special teams.
Bell’s final collegiate season at Michigan State University showcased why scouts viewed him as one of the strongest defensive backs available in the draft class.
The 6 foot 2 defender played in 12 games while making 11 starts for the Spartans and delivered career best numbers across several major defensive categories. Bell recorded 49 total tackles, five tackles for loss, one sack, and a team leading six pass breakups while handling the largest cornerback workload on the roster with 717 snaps.
According to Pro Football Focus, Bell finished the year as Michigan State’s highest graded defender with a 79.3 defensive grade, a statistic that further elevated his draft stock leading into the CFL selection process.
His physical size and ability to play extended snaps at cornerback could become especially valuable in the CFL, where larger field dimensions place additional pressure on defensive backs to cover space effectively while remaining physical in one on one situations.
Before transferring to Michigan State, Bell spent four seasons developing at University of Connecticut, where he appeared in 33 games and made 20 starts with the Huskies.
During his time at UConn, Bell totaled 94 tackles, five tackles for loss, 13 pass breakups, and one forced fumble while steadily building a reputation as a reliable and disciplined defender.
His path through multiple NCAA programs also provided experience against high level competition, something Saskatchewan hopes will help accelerate his transition into professional football.
Bell recently attended rookie minicamp with the Cleveland Browns before officially joining the Roughriders, adding another layer of professional experience before arriving in the CFL.
The timing of the move is important for Saskatchewan as teams around the league continue evaluating defensive depth during training camp and preseason preparations. Injuries and roster turnover often force CFL teams to rely heavily on young Canadian talent throughout the season, particularly in the secondary and on special teams units.
Bell’s versatility gives the Roughriders several options moving forward. He could compete for rotational defensive snaps early in the year while also becoming an immediate contributor in kick coverage packages.
In addition to signing Bell, Saskatchewan also announced the activation of Global kicker Alex Hale from the retired list.
Hale’s return adds stability and competition to the special teams unit as the Roughriders continue shaping their roster ahead of opening week.
For Saskatchewan, these moves reflect a broader effort to improve roster depth, increase athleticism on defense, and develop young Canadian talent capable of making an impact over the long CFL season.
With training camp continuing and roster battles intensifying across the league, Bell now enters one of the biggest opportunities of his football career. If his collegiate production translates to the professional level, the Roughriders may have secured one of the more intriguing defensive prospects from the 2026 CFL Draft class.
