Seattle overcame a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat the Los Angeles Rams 38–37 in overtime on Thursday night, taking control of the NFC West in one of the most dramatic games of the NFL season. The comeback was capped by a successful two-point conversion in overtime, making the Seahawks the first team in league history to win a game in that fashion. After Sam Darnold connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for a touchdown in overtime, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald elected to go for two instead of settling for a tie. Darnold found tight end Eric Saubert wide open, sealing the victory and clinching a playoff berth for Seattle.
“It was something we talked about throughout the season,” Macdonald said. “I trusted our guys.”
Seattle’s comeback effort was fueled by a series of momentum-shifting plays in the fourth quarter. Rashid Shaheed returned a punt 58 yards for a touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion that cut the deficit to one score. Later, Darnold threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to tight end AJ Barner.
The most unusual play of the night came on a two-point attempt when Darnold’s pass was deflected and ruled a backward pass after review. Running back Zach Charbonnet recovered the ball in the end zone, tying the game at 30 and forcing overtime.
Despite the loss, the Rams delivered an impressive offensive performance. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 457 yards and three touchdowns, while wide receiver Puka Nacua caught 12 passes for 225 yards and two scores. Nacua’s 41-yard touchdown reception in overtime initially gave Los Angeles the lead, but the Rams were unable to stop Seattle’s final drive.
Darnold finished with 270 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, showing resilience after struggling against the Rams earlier in the season. Seattle improved to 12–3 and moved into position for the NFC’s top seed, while Los Angeles fell to 11–4 and faces the possibility of a road playoff game. The Rams played without wide receiver Davante Adams, who missed the game with a hamstring injury. Seattle also suffered multiple injuries in the secondary during the fourth quarter, raising concerns ahead of their next matchup.
The Seahawks will travel to Carolina next, while the Rams head to Atlanta as the regular season nears its conclusion.
