Sean Payton Explains Broncos’ Decision to Re-Sign Sam Mustipher

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton addressed speculation surrounding the team’s recent decision to sign center Sam Mustipher, pushing back on claims that the move was intended to gain inside information ahead of Denver’s regular-season matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers. Mustipher was added from the Chargers’ practice squad shortly before the teams were set to meet, leading some observers to question the timing. Payton dismissed that idea, explaining that the signing was driven by necessity rather than strategy. With starting center Luke Wattenberg sidelined due to injury, the Broncos wanted to add an experienced player to stabilize the position for the remainder of the season. Payton emphasized that the move had nothing to do with scouting or gaining insight into the Chargers’ system. At 29 years old, Mustipher brings a significant amount of NFL experience. He entered the league in 2019 as an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame and spent four seasons with the Chicago Bears. After brief stints with the Baltimore Ravens and the Broncos earlier in 2024, he rejoined the Chargers before Denver brought him back once again. Over his career, Mustipher has appeared in 64 games and started 43, primarily at center. Scouting evaluations from his college days highlighted Mustipher’s intelligence, mobility, and effectiveness in zone-blocking schemes. While he may need support against stronger defensive linemen, his ability to move well laterally and make line calls has allowed him to contribute reliably when called upon.

With Wattenberg still on injured reserve, Mustipher is expected to serve as the backup to Alex Forsyth, who stepped into the starting role recently. Forsyth delivered a strong performance in Denver’s Christmas Day win over the Kansas City Chiefs, playing all 72 offensive snaps without allowing a sack or quarterback pressure. He also helped anchor a rushing attack that gained 128 yards. Payton later rewarded Forsyth with a game ball, a decision he said felt even more justified after reviewing the game film. According to the head coach, Forsyth’s composure and execution under pressure played a key role in the team’s success.

As the Broncos prepare for their final regular-season game, a win would secure the No. 1 seed in the AFC, making depth and reliability along the offensive line especially critical.
