NASHVILLE—Since their rookie season, first-round picks Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Devon Witherspoon have formed a close bond off the field while competing on it. Although Witherspoon received significant attention and earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie, he recognized Smith-Njigba’s exceptional talent. During his rookie season, Smith-Njigba served as the third receiver behind DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett, limiting his opportunities. However, in his second season, he recorded 100 receptions for 1,130 yards and six touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection. Now, in his third season, Smith-Njigba has emerged as one of the NFL’s elite receivers. In the Seahawks’ 30-24 win over the Titans, Smith-Njigba caught eight passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns, including a 63-yard score on his first catch. His 1,313 receiving yards this season broke DK Metcalf’s franchise record of 1,303 yards set in 2020. With six games remaining, Smith-Njigba is on pace to challenge Calvin Johnson’s NFL single-season record of 1,964 yards set in 2012. Witherspoon praised his teammate, saying, “It’s just hard to guard him. When he gets open, he’s efficient and has a great catch radius. I’m just a fan watching him.” Smith-Njigba, in turn, credited his teammates for the record, noting, “It’s a team award…without Sam [Darnold], without protection, and without other receivers, this doesn’t happen. I’m grateful for my team.”
Tyler Kupp, who joined the Seahawks this season, highlighted Smith-Njigba’s efficiency, citing his 4.6 yards per route run—the highest single-season mark since tracking began in 2016. Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald awarded Smith-Njigba a game ball, acknowledging his consistent performance, while quarterback Sam Darnold praised his preparation and attitude.
Left tackle Charles Cross and outside linebacker Derick Hall also lauded Smith-Njigba’s performance. Hall added, “JSN is always open…he does the work, he’s a leader, and we love to watch him.” Smith-Njigba’s consistency, effort, and skill have made him a standout for the Seahawks this season.
