St. Louis City came into town and bested the home Colorado Rapids 1-0 last night on Saturday at DICK’s Sporting Goods Park. Despite overall possession in favor of the Rapids (55.8% to 44.2%), Sang-Bin Jeong found the back of the net in the 26th minute of the first half. From that point, the match remained at a standoff on both sides playing back and forth. Colorado had actually started the game to a good pace, with a number of shots on goal and corner kick opportunities. Players like Darren Yapi and Georgi Minoungou generated many chances but were ultimately not able to convert to points. Unable to find the equalizer, both teams entered the half with the same 1-0 scoreline. Coming out of the break, Colorado appeared to execute a similar sense of attacking energy to create more scoring opportunities. However, a game-chaning red card soiled some momentum for Colorado, as defender Rob Holding was shown a straight red card in the 51st minute of the second half.
From there, the Rapids continued their aggressive style of attack despite being down to 10 men for roughly 40 minutes. Through several ensuing substitutions, Colorado was looking for a new spark, but they were more exposed and less efficient at the point of attack. St. Louis would also receive a red card of their own in the 87th minute on behalf of Chris Durkin. Despite being 10v10 at the end, Colorado still couldn’t find the equalizer. In the end, while Colorado controlled the game statistically, St. Louis proved to be more efficient. This one felt like a bit of a missed opportunity for the Rapids to take advantage of a lower-table opponent, but nonetheless, Colorado will shift focus to their next match against Minnestota United FC on Wednesday, May 13th. Kickoff for that game will be at Allianz Field, 6:30 pm MT.
