Steelers Open to an Aaron Rodgers Return as Players Praise QB.

The Pittsburgh Steelers remain open to the possibility of reuniting with quarterback Aaron Rodgers for the 2026 season, although sources suggest it is unlikely following head coach Mike Tomlin’s resignation. According to ESPN, Steelers players have expressed strong support for Rodgers during their exit interviews, with nearly all praising the four-time league MVP and signaling a desire for his return. Rodgers has earned widespread respect and admiration within the organization. At 42, Rodgers has not confirmed whether he will retire or return to the Steelers, indicating he intends to take time before making a decision. His choice may hinge on the team’s next head coach. Sources reported that the Steelers are likely to discuss their coaching vacancy with Mike McCarthy, Rodgers’ former coach in Green Bay. McCarthy, who is from Pittsburgh, previously worked with Steelers general manager Omar Khan in New Orleans in 2000 and spent the last five seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys before sitting out the 2025 season. Art Rooney II, Steelers team president, emphasized that Tomlin’s departure after 19 years decreases the likelihood of Rodgers returning, as the quarterback’s decision to join Pittsburgh last year was largely influenced by the opportunity to play under Tomlin.

Nonetheless, the organization’s ongoing interest and strong internal support for Rodgers continue to keep the possibility alive. Following the Steelers’ loss to the Houston Texans in the AFC wild-card round, Rodgers stated he would not make any "emotional decisions" regarding his future, describing the season as both challenging and enjoyable.
