The Golden State Warriors are keeping their longtime head coach in place, with Steve Kerr agreeing to a two-year contract extension that will extend his tenure through at least the next phase of the franchise’s transition, league sources confirmed Saturday. The new deal makes Kerr the highest-paid head coach in the NBA, according to league figures. He earned approximately $17.5 million last season. The agreement comes after several weeks of internal discussions between Kerr, team owner Joe Lacob, and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., focusing on roster direction, offensive philosophy, and the organization’s long-term competitive window. Although Kerr had previously left open the possibility of stepping away after the season, momentum shifted in recent weeks toward continuity. By the end of this week, both sides had reached a clear consensus to move forward together, extending one of the most successful coaching partnerships in modern NBA history. There had been real uncertainty earlier in the season, especially after a disappointing campaign in which Golden State finished 37–45 and missed the playoffs, falling into the play-in bracket before an early exit. Kerr himself acknowledged during the season that every coaching run has a natural endpoint and suggested he was evaluating whether a change might benefit both him and the organization. Despite that, key figures within the franchise, including star guard Stephen Curry, consistently expressed support for Kerr’s return. Curry, who remains under contract for at least one more season, was a vocal proponent of maintaining stability within the organization as the team evaluates its next competitive window.

The Warriors also conducted preliminary background planning on potential coaching replacements earlier in the offseason, but internal preference from ownership and leadership groups leaned heavily toward continuity rather than a reset. Kerr’s tenure in Golden State, which began in 2014, has been one of the most successful coaching runs in league history. Under his leadership, the Warriors captured multiple championships and established one of the most dominant dynasties of the modern NBA era. His system helped unlock MVP-level seasons from Curry and transformed the team into a perennial title contender for much of the past decade. Even with recent inconsistency and roster turnover, Kerr’s résumé remains among the strongest in the sport, highlighted by multiple championships and consistent playoff appearances during Golden State’s peak years. With Kerr now secured long term, the Warriors are expected to turn their focus toward roster restructuring. The franchise holds lottery positioning in the upcoming NBA Draft and is widely expected to explore both trade and free agency options to retool around its veteran core. The decision signals that Golden State is prioritizing continuity with its championship-era leadership while attempting to extend its competitive window rather than initiating a full rebuild.
