Tang Kai delivered the most commanding title defense of his reign Friday night, stopping Shamil Gasanov in the fourth round to retain the ONE Featherweight MMA World Championship at ONE Fight Night 43 inside Bangkok’s iconic Lumpinee Stadium.
Facing a challenger widely viewed as one of the division’s toughest stylistic tests, Tang turned in a disciplined and punishing performance, neutralizing Gasanov’s wrestling before systematically breaking him down on the feet. From the opening round, the Chinese champion showed he was fully prepared for the Dagestani’s grappling-heavy attack. Gasanov repeatedly shot for takedowns, but Tang sprawled effectively and made him pay with sharp counters during the clinch exits. Each failed attempt appeared to drain confidence from the challenger while allowing Tang to dictate the pace. In the second round, Gasanov briefly abandoned the wrestling approach and chose to exchange strikes. That decision favored the titleholder. Tang established his jab early, snapping the Russian’s head back and consistently landing the cleaner shots during stand-up exchanges. As the round progressed, Gasanov struggled to find rhythm against Tang’s timing and movement.
The third stanza saw Gasanov return to his wrestling roots, but Tang’s takedown defense remained airtight. The champion also began targeting the lead leg with punishing low kicks, gradually slowing the challenger’s mobility and limiting his ability to explode into shots. A clean right hand late in the round further emphasized Tang’s growing control of the fight.
By the fourth, the damage to Gasanov’s leg had become a major factor. Tang continued chopping at the lead leg until one brutal kick visibly buckled the challenger. Desperate to regain momentum, Gasanov forced another takedown attempt and briefly gained top position, but Tang quickly reversed the scramble and regained control. Once back on the feet, Tang closed the show emphatically. A crushing knee to the head stunned Gasanov before another low kick sent him collapsing to the canvas. Tang followed with a barrage of hammerfists, forcing the referee to stop the contest at 2:41 of Round 4.
The victory pushed Tang’s professional record to 20-3 and marked the second successful defense of his ONE featherweight title. The performance also earned him a US$50,000 bonus and further strengthened his case as one of the most complete mixed martial artists competing in the sport today.
