ARLINGTON, Texas – Texas Tech dominated BYU 34-7 in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday, earning the Red Raiders their first conference title and virtually guaranteeing a first-round College Football Playoff bye. The victory marks a historic moment for Texas Tech, propelled by key contributions from transfer players who have transformed the team this season. Jacob Rodriguez led the defensive effort with 13 tackles, while Ben Roberts, overcoming an early injury scare, secured two crucial interceptions in the second half. The Red Raiders forced four turnovers and limited BYU to a season-low 200 total yards. “If we are gonna buy a team, why not be the best?” Rodriguez said following the game. Quarterback Behren Morton, making his 35th start, threw two touchdowns to Coy Eakin. Kicker Stone Harrington added four field goals, extending his record-setting season. The victory brings Texas Tech’s record to 12-1, with the Red Raiders ranked No. 4 in the College Football Playoff standings. BYU (11-2, No. 11 CFP), which lost to Texas Tech earlier in the season 29-7, struggled offensively after a strong opening drive. The Cougars turned the ball over four times in the second half, including two interceptions and two fumbles. “You can’t make a lot of mistakes like we did,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. “I think they’re the best team in the country, and I’m confirming it. It just so happens we had to play them twice.”
Roberts’ defensive heroics were pivotal, including a one-handed interception in the fourth quarter. Despite an abdominal injury sustained earlier in the game, Roberts credited the training staff for helping him recover at halftime.
Texas Tech’s offense was balanced and efficient, with Eakin scoring twice, including a spectacular 33-yard leaping touchdown in the second quarter. The Red Raiders’ defense continued its dominance, holding BYU’s leading rusher LJ Martin to 76 yards, well below his season average. With the Big 12 title secured, Texas Tech is expected to advance to the CFP quarterfinals, potentially playing in the Cotton Bowl at AT&T Stadium on New Year’s Eve. BYU, meanwhile, will await its bowl game assignment, marking its 19th bowl appearance in 21 seasons. Texas Tech’s historic season underscores the impact of strategic transfers and consistent coaching, solidifying the Red Raiders as a formidable force in college football this year.
