The final regular-season Associated Press Top 25 poll in women’s college basketball has been released, with UConn Huskies women's basketball, UCLA Bruins women's basketball, Texas Longhorns women's basketball, and South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball securing the top four positions. These rankings align exactly with the No. 1 seeds in the upcoming NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament, which begins this week.
UConn earned the distinction of being the No. 1 overall seed in the tournament bracket. Historically, teams ranked No. 1 in the final poll before March Madness have gone on to win the national championship 17 times out of 43 occurrences since 1982, the inaugural year of the women’s tournament. UCLA Bruins women's basketball received three first-place votes from the national media panel, while UConn Huskies women's basketball dominated with the remaining 28. Due to a limited number of games involving ranked teams last week, there was little movement within the Top 25 rankings. Following the top four, LSU Tigers women's basketball, Vanderbilt Commodores women's basketball, Iowa Hawkeyes women's basketball, and Duke Blue Devils women's basketball rounded out the next group of elite teams. Michigan Wolverines women's basketball and West Virginia Mountaineers women's basketball completed the top 10, with all ten teams set to host NCAA tournament games in the opening rounds.
In terms of conference representation, the Southeastern Conference led the rankings with eight teams, followed by the Big Ten Conference with seven. Both the Big 12 Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference had four teams each, while the Ivy League and Big East Conference each placed one team in the poll. The NCAA tournament tips off with the First Four matchups scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, officially launching this year’s championship pursuit.
