Former three-division world champion Vasiliy Lomachenko is preparing to come out of retirement and is targeting a return to the ring later this year, according to his longtime manager, Egis Klimas. Klimas confirmed Wednesday that discussions are underway for Lomachenko’s comeback, with the expectation that the former lightweight champion could fight sometime this fall. The 37-year-old officially retired in June 2025 after stepping away from the sport for a year to evaluate his future. His final appearance came in May 2024, when he stopped former undisputed lightweight champion George Kambosos Jr. in Australia. Before retiring, Lomachenko had been linked to a potential showdown with Gervonta Davis, though negotiations never advanced into a finalized bout. Now healthy and reportedly free from the back problems that affected the latter stages of his career, Lomachenko is expected to pursue high-profile matchups upon his return. His promotional agreement with Top Rank expired this week, making him a promotional free agent for the first time in years. Widely regarded as one of boxing’s most technically gifted fighters, Lomachenko compiled an 18-3 professional record with 12 knockouts and captured world titles in three divisions. Before turning professional, he built one of the most celebrated amateur careers in boxing history, winning Olympic gold medals for Ukraine at the 2008 and 2012 Games while reportedly posting a 396-1 amateur record. Lomachenko’s last major title opportunity came in 2023, when he dropped a close and disputed decision to Devin Haney in a fight many observers believed could have gone either way. He rebounded the following year with a dominant performance against Kambosos before walking away from the sport.
His comeback arrives at a time when the lightweight and junior welterweight divisions are stacked with marquee names, creating immediate intrigue around who he could face next. While no opponent or weight class has been announced, those close to Lomachenko indicate he intends to remain active once he returns.
