SUNRISE, Fla. — Carter Verhaeghe scored two goals in the final 90 seconds, rallying the Florida Panthers to a 4-3 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night. With Panthers goaltender Daniil Tarasov pulled for an extra attacker, Verhaeghe first tied the game at 3-3 with 1:30 remaining. Fifteen seconds later, he scored the game-winning goal on a pass from Matthew Tkachuk, as the puck deflected off Detroit defenseman Justin Faulk and past goalie Josh Gibson. Vinnie Hinostroza recorded his first goal and assist with Florida, while Niko Mikkola also scored. Tarasov made 25 saves in the win. Faulk contributed a goal and an assist for Detroit in just his second game with the team after being acquired from St. Louis at Friday's trade deadline. Patrick Kane and Marco Kasper also scored for the Red Wings, who were shut out by Florida 3-1 in a previous matchup on Friday. Gibson finished with 24 saves.
Hinostroza gave the Panthers an early 1-0 lead at 9:48 of the first period. He had previously played nine games with Florida during the 2020–21 season but did not register a point. Detroit responded in the second period when Faulk scored on a 30-foot backhand shot at 12:59 to make it 2-1. Florida tied the game 2-2 at 5:10 of the third period when Mikkola’s shot from the blue line deflected off Faulk’s skate and past Gibson. Detroit briefly regained the lead on Kasper’s breakaway just over a minute later. The Panthers played without their top scorers, Brad Marchand and Sam Reinhart. Detroit’s Andrew Copp left the game in the second period with a left-leg injury and did not return.
