Wake Forest Defeats Virginia Tech 95–89 in Overtime During ACC Tournament Opener.

The Wake Forest Demon Deacons defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 95–89 in overtime during the opening round of the ACC Tournament in Charlotte, North Carolina. Guard Myles Colvin led Wake Forest with 18 points as the team placed seven players in double figures to secure the victory. Wake Forest, the No. 13 seed in the tournament, advanced to face the No. 5 seed, the Clemson Tigers men's basketball, in the next round. Virginia Tech entered the tournament as the No. 12 seed. Several players contributed to the Demon Deacons’ balanced scoring performance. Sebastian Akins scored 14 points, while Tre’Von Spillers and reserve Mekhi Mason each added 13 points. Juke Harris, Nate Calmese, and Cooper Schwieger also contributed 10 points each. Wake Forest shot 51 percent from the field, making 30 of 59 attempts, though the team struggled from beyond the three-point line, converting only 8 of 22 shots (36 percent). Virginia Tech was led by Ben Hammond, who scored 23 points. Jailen Bedford added 17 points, reserve Jaden Schutt scored 15, and Tobi Lawal finished with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Despite the loss, the Hokies controlled the boards, outrebounding Wake Forest 45–28. However, they shot just 41 percent from the field, making 29 of 70 attempts.


In overtime, Colvin quickly gave Wake Forest momentum by hitting a jump shot and a three-pointer, helping the Demon Deacons take an 80–75 lead. The team maintained the advantage for the remainder of the extra period. With 1:25 remaining, Lawal dunked to bring Virginia Tech within one point at 86–85, but Akins responded with a three-point play to extend Wake Forest’s lead. Virginia Tech was unable to close the gap after that. Regulation ended in a 75–75 tie after Hammond made two free throws with 47 seconds remaining. Neither team scored again before the end of regulation, sending the game into overtime. Wake Forest held a 38–34 lead at halftime and ultimately secured the win with a strong offensive performance in the extra period.
