The Cleveland Cavaliers made one of the most unexpected moves of the NBA trade deadline by acquiring James Harden from the Los Angeles Clippers. In exchange, Cleveland sent Darius Garland and a second-round draft pick to Los Angeles, signaling a clear shift toward a win-now strategy. Adding Harden immediately upgrades the Cavaliers’ playmaking at the point guard position. His ability to create offense and facilitate should ease the burden on Donovan Mitchell and give Cleveland a more dynamic backcourt. While Harden is no longer in his prime, his experience and offensive IQ could prove valuable during a playoff run.

However, this trade is unlikely to be Cleveland’s final move before the deadline. One pressing issue is the contract situation involving Lonzo Ball. Ball’s $10 million salary for the season places the Cavaliers in danger of crossing the luxury tax threshold. Moving his contract—likely to a rebuilding team—could help Cleveland avoid financial penalties while potentially recouping future draft assets. Jarrett Allen is another name to watch in trade discussions. His sizable contract could be moved to create additional financial flexibility. Trading Allen would also open the door for Evan Mobley to take on a full-time role at center, a position he has played extensively throughout his basketball career.

Cleveland has already shown a willingness to be aggressive, having previously acquired Keon Ellis and Dennis Schröder from the Sacramento Kings in exchange for De’Andre Hunter. With those additions and the Harden trade completed, the Cavaliers may still pursue another impact player to strengthen their championship push. One high-profile name circulating in league rumors is Giannis Antetokounmpo. While the idea is intriguing, such a deal would require an enormous package of assets, likely including Mobley. Given Mobley’s importance to Cleveland’s long-term future, the Cavaliers may be hesitant to go that far.

As the trade deadline approaches, Cleveland appears committed to maximizing its current title window. Whether through financial maneuvering or another blockbuster deal, the Cavaliers are positioning themselves as a team all-in on winning now.
