Wilson Records Gordie Howe Hat Trick as Capitals Defeat Rangers 6-3.

WASHINGTON — Tom Wilson led the Washington Capitals to a 6-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Wednesday, contributing two goals and an assist. Earlier in the day, Wilson had been named to Canada’s Olympic roster. During the second period, he fought Sam Carrick, completing a Gordie Howe hat trick — a goal, an assist, and a fight — marking at least his second since March 3, 2025. Justin Sourdif also scored twice for the Capitals, while Anthony Beauvillier and Aliaksei Protas each added a goal. With the win, Washington has captured two of its last three games. Adam Fox returned from long-term injured reserve for the Rangers, scoring a goal and an assist. Vincent Trocheck and Braden Schneider also scored, though New York suffered its third consecutive loss. In the second period, with the game tied 1-1, Wilson sparked the Capitals’ momentum. After leveling Noah Laba with a hit, he moved to the front of the net and scored off a feed from Connor McMichael, becoming the first Washington player to reach 20 goals this season. Shortly after, he responded to Laba’s hit by fighting Carrick. The resulting power play allowed Sourdif to score, ending a 16-game goal drought.

Fox answered with a power-play goal to bring the Rangers within one at 3-2 going into the third period. Protas and Wilson, who scored his 200th career goal, added late goals to secure the Capitals’ lead. Schneider scored again to bring New York within two, and Wilson assisted Sourdif on an empty-net goal. Goalies Charlie Lindgren and Jonathan Quick made 22 and 21 saves, respectively.

The Rangers will visit Florida in the Winter Classic on Friday, while the Capitals travel to Ottawa on Thursday.
