Wizards Expect Brian Keefe to Remain Head Coach as Rebuild Continues into 2026–27 Season.

The Washington Wizards are planning to keep head coach Brian Keefe in place for the 2026–27 season, according to general manager Will Dawkins. Speaking at a recent end-of-season press conference, Dawkins expressed confidence in Keefe, saying, “I anticipate Brian to be here,” as the team continues building through its rebuild. Keefe has spent the past couple of seasons guiding a young Wizards roster through a developmental stage, helping several recent first-round picks grow into larger roles. That group includes Alex Sarr, Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington, Bilal Coulibaly, Will Riley, and Kyshawn George. Since taking over as head coach in January 2024 after Wes Unseld Jr., Keefe has posted a 43–160 record while working with one of the youngest teams in the league and navigating constant roster changes. Even with on-court struggles, Washington made some big moves during the season, including trades for All-Star guard Trae Young and veteran forward Anthony Davis. Injuries limited both additions, with Young appearing in only five games and Davis missing the entire season due to a finger injury. Davis is still under contract and has said he remains committed to the team heading into 2026–27. The Wizards finished with a 17–65 record, the worst in the NBA, and will head into the draft lottery with a 14% chance of landing the No. 1 pick in what’s expected to be a strong draft class. Team leadership has acknowledged the challenges Keefe has faced while managing a young roster and ongoing changes.

Before becoming head coach, Keefe spent more than a decade as an NBA assistant with several organizations, including the Oklahoma City Thunder, New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets, and the Wizards.
