The ban on 12-6 elbows from the MMA Unified Rules was lifted by the Association of Boxing Commissions and Combative Sports on Tuesday, marking a significant acceptance of this controversial strike in mixed martial arts.
Andy Foster, the executive officer of the California State Athletic Commission, informed MMA Junkie that the ABC rules committee unanimously voted to remove the ban that had been in effect since the creation of the MMA Unified Rules in 2000. The 12-6 elbow, previously defined in the MMA Unified Rules as a "straight up straight down elbow strike" to a grounded opponent, will no longer be prohibited.
Foster mentioned that the prohibition on 12-6 elbows will not be enforced until November 1, giving individual state athletic commissions the option to adopt them. Jon Jones infamously incurred his first defeat by disqualifying himself for using multiple 12-6 elbows on Matt Hamill in December 2009 at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale. Jones was in control of the fight against Hamill for 4:14 of the first round and was on the verge of securing a victory when Steve Mazzagatti intervened to end the match.
Following the incident, Jones made an appeal to the Nevada Athletic Commission, however, they declined to listen to his argument. Over the past few years, Jones has expressed his desire for the fight to be reversed, a sentiment that both UFC CEO Dana White and UFC commentator Joe Rogan share. Jones once again conveyed this wish on Instagram on Tuesday and mentioned White in his post.
