Ancelotti Says Brazil Let World Cup Nerves Take Over in Draw With Morocco.

Brazil Begin World Cup Campaign with Nervy Draw Against Morocco

Brazil began their 2026 World Cup campaign with a shaky 1-1 draw against Morocco on Saturday at MetLife Stadium, with manager Carlo Ancelotti admitting his side was rattled by nerves in the opening stages.

Morocco dominated much of the first half and took a deserved lead through Ismael Saibari, exposing gaps in Brazil's midfield and defensive shape. The five-time champions struggled to control possession and looked vulnerable in transition before Vinícius Júnior rescued a point with a brilliant second-half equalizer.

Ancelotti Points to Anxiety After Sluggish Start

“I think it was a tough match, especially in the first half,” Ancelotti said after the game. “Maybe the team was a bit anxious, and the nerves were all over the place. The second half was better, but it was still tough, and I'm sure we'll get better.”

The result extends Brazil's wait for a convincing opening performance at a World Cup and highlighted the work still ahead for Ancelotti's squad, which is adapting to his tactical approach after he took charge earlier this year.

Vinícius: We Started Really Badly

Vinícius, whose equalizer was his second career World Cup goal, also acknowledged Brazil's poor opening.

“We started on a really bad note,” he said through a translator. “We have to hold on to the ball and move better.”

Brazil improved after halftime, with more control through midfield and better spacing between the lines, but they still created relatively few clear chances against a disciplined Moroccan defense.

Pressure, Scrutiny, and the Road Ahead

Ancelotti faced pointed questions in his postmatch news conference about his lineup choices and tactics, yet he insisted the draw was not a disastrous result.

“You don't win the World Cup in your first match,” he said. “I'm not disappointed, but I'm not satisfied, either. We need to work, but that's normal.”

He praised Morocco as “a solid team, very well organized,” and emphasized that the priority remains progressing from the group stage and improving as the tournament unfolds.

Brazil's next match comes Friday in Philadelphia against Haiti, where a stronger performance will be expected from one of the tournament favorites.
