Sweden opened their World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion on Sunday, overpowering Tunisia 5-1 in Monterrey behind a standout performance from Brighton midfielder Yasin Ayari, who scored twice in a dominant attacking display. Yasin Ayari led the charge with a brace, while Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres also got on the scoresheet as Sweden punished a series of defensive lapses from a Tunisia side that had entered the tournament with a strong qualifying record. Sweden struck early, taking control inside seven minutes after a long ball caused confusion in the Tunisian back line. Goalkeeper Mouhib Chamakh rushed out to challenge Isak, and although Gyökeres saw his initial attempt blocked, Ayari reacted first and rifled a finish from distance to give Sweden the lead. Tunisia responded with more intent midway through the half, with Elias Saad forcing a save from Kristoffer Nordfeldt, but Sweden soon doubled their advantage. Isak collected the ball on the left during a swift counterattack, cut inside, and curled a precise effort into the far corner beyond Chamakh’s reach. Despite Sweden’s control, Tunisia found a way back into the match before halftime. A well-delivered cross from Hannibal Mejbri was met by Omar Rekik, who headed home to cut the deficit and briefly shift momentum. Any hopes of a comeback were quickly extinguished after the break. Sweden capitalized on another turnover when Isak dispossessed captain Ellyes Skhiri near the edge of the box and set up Gyökeres, who calmly finished to restore the two-goal cushion. Substitute Mattias Svanberg then made an immediate impact, adding a fourth after VAR confirmed he had been played onside following a subtle touch from Isak in the buildup. Ayari capped the performance in the closing moments, pouncing again on a loose ball outside the area and firing in his second goal to complete a convincing 5-1 victory for Sweden.
