Nolan Arenado delivered in the clutch once again, blasting a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 7-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night at Camden Yards. With the game tied 4-4 in the eighth, Arenado sent a solo shot over the left field wall off Orioles reliever Bryan Baker (3-1), sparking a three-run rally that helped St. Louis snap Baltimore’s three-game winning streak. Nolan Gorman and Jordan Walker followed with back-to-back triples, and Masyn Winn added an RBI single to cap the surge.

“We’re starting to find our rhythm,” Arenado said after the game.

“These are the kinds of wins that build momentum.” The Cardinals jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run homer by Lars Nootbaar off Baltimore starter Tomoyuki Sugano. But defensive miscues and missed opportunities kept the Orioles in the game. Baltimore clawed back with a run in the fourth, taking advantage of a misplayed double play opportunity by St. Louis. Ryan O’Hearn then gave the Orioles a brief lead in the fifth, launching a three-run homer to make it 4-3. The Cardinals answered with a game-tying run in the seventh, and took control in the eighth with Arenado’s blast and a flurry of extra-base hits. Steven Matz (3-1) earned the win in relief, and Ryan Helsley closed it out in the ninth for his 11th save of the season. The loss highlighted ongoing struggles for the Orioles with runners in scoring position — they went just 1-for-14 in those scenarios and failed to capitalize on key opportunities, including a leadoff double in the second and a stolen-base showcase by Jorge Mateo in the sixth that resulted in no runs.

Key Notes:

  • St. Louis has now won 11 of its last 17 road games after starting the season 1-10 away from home.

  • The Orioles' only hit with runners in scoring position was O’Hearn’s home run.

  • The Cardinals bullpen tossed 4.1 scoreless innings to secure the win.

The series continues Wednesday night as both teams look to build momentum heading into June.
